Designed to encourage quiet reflection, studying, and informal gathering, this campus courtyard at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater transforms an underutilized outdoor space into a welcoming destination for students. Granite Ridge Landscape Company partnered with the university to design and construct an environment that feels natural, inviting, and seamlessly integrated into the surrounding campus.
The project features a custom timber pergola that creates architectural interest and shaded gathering space, complemented by decorative paving, natural limestone boulders, native-inspired plantings, and meandering aggregate pathways that encourage exploration and relaxation. Every element was thoughtfully selected to create a landscape that feels established and organic while providing durable, low-maintenance performance in a high-traffic campus setting.
The completed courtyard offers students a peaceful outdoor retreat where they can study, meet with classmates, or simply enjoy a quiet moment between classes—all within a landscape that reflects Granite Ridge’s commitment to thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship.
